Upping Production Value & Bringing More to the Turning Table in 2016

Last year was amazing. Well, the second half of the year was. The first half was full of bad mistakes. Never-mind though – onwards and upwards as they say. And as the sun rose above the roof lines on Boxing Day morning, I had an idea develop incredibly quickly in my head and it has hardly let me sleep since. Here it is:

Untitled-2 The Premise:
Since I started turning after watching the likes of (my now, friend) Mike Waldt and others, I wanted to give something back to the community that helped me get turning – so I started doing videos of my turnings, experiments and the like which have brought me approaching three and a half thousand subscribers on YouTube and more friend requests on Facebook than I can shake a stick at. But I’d like to give more.

Better Production Value:

Everyone who publishes on YouTube knows that your videos are not going to be watched from start to finish by everyone who clicks start, and the optimum length for a video is generally just seven minutes – not long for a video about woodturning! My average viewing time is 8:13 and increasing which means I am doing something right as far as content and viewer retention is concerned.

I also know that a lot of my subscribers do watch the entire video, all-be-it that they skip through some parts of the video – they get to the end, which is of course, good.

But, there is so much more to each piece that I turn. I don’t always do ‘ordinary’ stuff that can be talked about in seven minutes, hence why my videos generally stretch up to the 20 – 25 minute mark.

From February 2016 though, all new videos will be shot with multiple cameras offering me more options in the editing stage to choose the best angle to illustrate the technique I am using. I will also be going into more detail about each stage of the process – the creative process, for example, or what I am looking for in the piece of wood I am turning.

Also, I am putting together original music for the videos too. Viewers already hear one of my first ‘compositions’ in every video – the opening titles music is my own work. Whilst the downloadable music from YouTube is superb, you hear it on multiple videos no matter what the genre. So I want to be different and create my own music for the videos I produce for you.

“But won’t all this make longer videos that people don’t watch?” I hear you say. Well, yes it will, but the idea doesn’t end there! The video that goes up on YouTube will still be as short as it possibly can be and along the same lines as those I currently publish, which is more of an overview of a process rather than anything in-depth…and this is where the second version of the video comes in – the Director’s Cut, you could say.[membership level=”0″]

Before I continue, I must make one thing very clear! The videos and other content I put out there for free on YouTube and other sites will continue to be free on YouTube and other sites. It is free, and will remain so. What follows has to be a paid-for service. I love producing free content for people, but this is extra, if you want it.

If you do, thank you! You can help support what I do. If not, no problem – the free stuff will still be there for you, with the better production value thrown in.

From Blank to Beautiful:
The second version of the video will have different branding and become part of a series of products I’m calling ‘Woodturning: From Blank to Beautiful’ (FBB). It is in these videos that the in-depth illustration of my techniques will be explained. The standard videos do a reasonable job, but these will go into a lot of detail and may be up to an hour long. Maybe. This is also where multiple camera angles will also be very useful!

These videos will be available for download from here for very little money as I want to keep giving as much as I can.

.pdf Worksheets:
To accompany all the special videos, will be downloadable and printable pdf worksheets pin-pointing the finer aspects of the project. They will be designed with a minimum of fuss so they can be printed and taken to the lathe and worked through step by step. The worksheets will include a tool list, measurements, screen-shots from the video with a description of what I am doing in that step as well as a description of the creative processes my head is going through at various points.

These will be available with the video as a package, or separately as a stand-alone product.

Costs:
As you can imagine, there is a lot of work in putting these together, so there has to be a cost implication there somewhere. Let me stress again though that the free content will continue to be free. FBB is over and above the free stuff and entirely optional for my followers and subscribers. One of the .pdf worksheets for example is just £3.00 and the full length video and .pdf is only £8.00. Pretty inexpensive really, I think!

Membership Options:
Pricing is something I want to keep as low as possible, and so have decided on an ultra low cost membership option for people to help support the content creation. There are plenty of benefits for joining…:

The first three projects of ‘From Blank to Beautiful’ have already been published and are available in the shop. The new camera angles and music have been received well on YouTube, and the full length videos, I think, are great. Check out the Three Part Ring Box for a special offer for new members.

  1. […] From Blank to Beautiful A new line of products evolved of the Christmas and New Year period, and the first three projects in the From Blank to Beautiful (FBB) collection are now available. The idea behind FBB is to give a bit more to the content already out there by providing, for nominal fees, advert free videos for download. All projects, from January 2016 onward will have special full length versions of the videos available from here together with .pdf worksheets. There is more information in this post from 4th Feb.
