Splitting the Jury: Bound #1 and #2

I’d been thinking about doing a bound project for a while when I figured that there has been a lot of segmenting going on recently, plus a lot of colouring work being shown off on social media, so now would be a good time to play with some binding.

I never would have thought that a simple bowl with a ‘V’ cut out of it and then bound with leather would create such a reaction! There are downloads available of this project here.

Bound #1 is a simple piece with just a hint of colouring, together with a ‘V’ cut out of it opposite a small feature. The V goes from the rim right down to the foot, the inside of which was hand finished down to 400, like the rest of the piece. Here’s a few images of the piece and a video showing the process.

Bound #2 was a different kettle of fish altogether!

The comments on #1 were so interesting in that they seemed to have split my followers into two ranks: Like and Not-Like. Some of the comments offered ideas of what to do next, so taking them on board, I came up with Bound #2.

It was a more enjoyable and creative project for me, as I could get the blow torch and dremel out and really go to town on the piece! Here are some pictures of the piece, and the video beneath.

If you fancy having a go at a project like this, the videos of both #1 and #2 are available for download together with a .pdf worksheet here.
