Sharpening Gouges and Scrapers

Here we go. After many requests on sharpening, here’s how I sharpen my gouges and scrapers on an inexpensive bench grinder.

convexThere are many good videos out there on sharpening gouges and scrapers etc, but many people have asked me how I do mine. So in this week’s video, I show the world how I do it, and get very acceptable results using my cheap bench grinder and a fingernail jig made by an engineer in Cornwall.

Most important for a gouge, in my (and many other’s opinions) is a slightly convex sweep to the wings on the fingernail grind. I find this is best achieved in a three-stage action: Left side, right side and then the toe. You’ll see how in the video.

If you are in the UK and would like one of the jigs
