Would you Recommend this to a Friend? Absolutely!

My day of wood turning tuition by Martin was fantastic. I learned about sharpening my turning tools, methods to sand and finish the work and how to use my tools properly. As someone who had been learning via the medium of YouTube, I’d got into plenty of bad habits which Martin helped me fix. I still have plenty of practice ahead of me but I’ve got a great starting point now to go forward. I also went home with my o wn beautiful bowl that I’d turned! (with some honing from Martin). Great tutor, very patient, couldn’t recommend the one-to-one day enough.

I wanted to improve my sanding technique and learn about coloring and texturing. As with the other reviews, Martin has a very relaxed style of teaching and I really felt at ease. I got to grips with the sanding and have since been able to replicate it at home. I especially enjoyed the colouring aspect and produced a great effect on the base of the bowl. With Martin’s help, I added texture and he gave me the confidence to try it at home as well. While turning on the lathe we discussed the height of my own lathe and the swing over the bed and Martin demonstrated the difference with a bowl blank. This stuck in my mind and as a result I have made a platform to stand on. The difference it made to turning a bowl was immediately noticeable, so thank you Martin for all the advice, plus a comment in passing discussion that has helped me immensely.

A combination of health issues and pressure from work had meant that my turning had got into a rut.

This was just the day I needed. Martin took me through technique, design and a little on colouring. There was a lot I needed to change but Martin was always encouraging.

A day with a thoroughgoing, innovative professional woodturner with a great attitude and rampant enthusiasm for his craft….what’s not to like!

I returned to Martin’s workshop in January 2018 for a topup day of training/mentoring, having completed my first full-day training session with him back in July 2017. I was equally as delighted with this session as I was the last one. This time, at my request, we covered a wide range of topics – brushup of my bowl technique, methods of using all the different turning tools, sharpening techniques, and colouring/finishing methods. Martin is a really good teacher/mentor, I learned a lot and really enjoyed the session. Many thanks Martin

Hi Martin, Just wanted to say how much we enjoyed our day of tuition. Used our lathe a couple of days ago and felt more confident and relaxed – really noticed the difference.

I did a 1-to-1 day with Martin where we covered bowl turning. It was just a great day; I came away with so much it’s impossible to list it all here. Everything about the course was perfect, from the location to the tuition. Martin’s such an easy going chap, it’s more like spending time with a mate than having a lesson. Absolutely fantastic, if you’re considering having a lesson don’t hesitate, do it!

I did the 1-2-1 course in July, as a complete beginner to woodturning. It was an excellent experience and I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone. Martin is a really good teacher and coach – he explained and demonstrated things well, he paced the course to my own progress and aptitude, and he struck a very good balance between flexibility and letting me discover and try things myself vs instructing me firmly when I was messing something up or doing a technique wrongly. He was very committed to ensuring that I completed one finished piece of work (a bowl) as close to his own very high standard of perfection as is possible for an amateur beginner. The workshop location, facilities, equipment, layout and setup are all excellent and help the learning experience. You will get that I enjoyed it enormously and will return for more!

I did the 1-1 beginners course with Martin and it was a great day. Learned a lot and felt confident that this would be a skill that I wanted to invest a lot more time in. The facilities were good, food was excellent.

All of my questions were answered and I even managed to produce something half decent on the day.

    Would recommend to others.

I did a 1-1 course in colouring and texturing with Martin. I had a fantastic time and learnt so many different aspects in texturing and colouring as well as improving my turning skills. The workshop is light and airy which in turn has made me improve my own setup. I really can recommend and hopefully I’ll go back soon. Cheers Martin.

I spent a 1-1 day with Martin to develop my basic Woodturning skills (I am a recent wood turner, and self-taught).

Martin is a great teacher, instructive, patient, helpful, and a genuinely nice person.

I throughly enjoyed my day, and learned a great deal. It has already improved both my skills and my understanding of how to safely use my lathe and tools.

The workshop environment is great, open, light, with lovely views over the fields. The cows in the next field were lively!

As one of the other reviewers mentioned, great food as well. 🙂

I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Martin and his courses, I want to go back soon.

From feeling I can’t to knowing I can. That basically sums up my 1 to 1 day with Martin at the Black Dog Workshop.

Martin’s very friendly and relaxed style of tutoring proved to be all I needed to prove to myself that my doubts about my skills were not justified, i just lacked the techniques needed to bring those skills to the surface.

The piece I made during the lesson is something that before the lesson I would never have thought I could make, but it now sits proudly on my coffee table for everyone to see.

I would seriously recommend a 1 to 1 full day session at the Black Dog Workshop for anyone either looking to start wood turning or improve on existing techniques.

The day even came with a lovely serving of Mac & Cheese (other options available) at the half day break.

    Thanks Martin
    Well worth every penny.

I had a 1-2-1 with Martin as I wanted to sort out my tool sharpening on the Pro Edge which Martin did with ease. I also wanted to improve my bowl tool skills so that I could get a better finish with less sanding. I produced a 10 inch sycamore bowl, with Martin help this was made easy and we also managed to do coloring. It was a great day in a well appointed workshop and Martins teaching skills make you feel very welcome and at easy. Thanks Martin.

I went back to the Black Dog Workshop on a one to one to recap on spindle turning as I find using the spindle gouge particularly difficult to get the grasp of, and at the same time do the Metal Reactive Paints Workshop. Martin was kind enough to merge these two workshops into a one-day 1-2-1 and I was able to turn 2 candle sticks colour and age them. I learnt the differences of how to apply the 3 different types of reactive paints and different styles to get different effects. A very informative workshop, and the Nova Comet Midi Lathes are very easy to use, so are the lathe-stations. A very well thought of workshop and extremely well organised.

I returned for a second course – a bud vase course, this time I learnt how to use the spindle roughing gouge and the spindle gouge. I used a log which gave the bud vase a natural edge and this was a great introduction to creating pieces with natural edges, and I learnt how the piece feels when sanding if the area isn’t smooth (as with a natural edge!). I also learnt how to turn using a tenon, how to use the drill chuck properly as many other things such as why I should make the neck of the vase larger than the glass test tube. Another brilliant day with lots of knowledge gained. Thank you Martin.
