Some of the bowl courses run on Fridays with the below colouring course running on the Saturday straight after. You could book onto both and make it a weekend of woodturning!

Creative Colouring:

Learn how to successfully colour wood using the Intrinsic Collection wood dyes which includes a sample set of the Intrinsic Colours for you to take away.

I’ll guide you through how to get the perfect surface on which to apply the colours and demonstrate how to successfully blend the colours together for a glorious piece that will become the centre of attention in your home.

IMPORTANT: This course is aimed at turners who can turn a simple bowl in under and hour without supervision, and using gouges. It will not be possible to coach you through the turning of a bowl on this course. If you use carbide tipped tools, and can still turn a bowl in under an hour using them, you must bring your tools with you.

Gorgeous Goblets:

Enjoy the day turning a gorgeous goblet and learn about lines, form, the tools to use, how to use them and perhaps most importantly, how to finish it beautifully. There are currently no available dates for Goblet courses in 2019.

I have just finished a one to one day with Martin in his Black Dog Workshop and I have to say it was fabulous. I have been turning and making bowls for 3 years but still left the day feeling that I had learned more than I thought possible. Correct presentation of the gouge enabled me to take larger, more aggressive cuts and achieve better tool finish meaning less time sanding!! Martin’s teaching style is relaxed and this helped me to relax too.
Living as I do in the middle of nowhere, it is difficult for me to meet and talk with others who share my passion for woodturning. The opportunity to ‘talk tools’ was invaluable and, being able to try some different tools has helped me to understand what should be next on my very large shopping list.
At the end of the day I had a beautiful bowl to be proud of and I feel confident that the quality of my turning, my understanding of preparation and of finishing are all vastly improved. Martin also gave me plenty of tips on how to get the best out of his range of ‘Intrinsic Colours’ and ‘Hampshire Sheen High Gloss’ that I had been struggling with prior to my visit.
For anyone who might be considering joining Martin for a day of tuition, either one to one or in a small group, just do it.
You will have a great day and learn loads!!
    Huge thanks Martin.

The Goblets course was my third and most challenging to-date with Martin. Another enjoyable day in the workshop with Martin gave me yet more skills and confidence. The results were inspiring. Thanks Martin! Fully recommended.

The creative colouring course was my second course with Martin. Not only did I turn my second ever bowl but I learned new tecniques and of course how to colour and finish the wood using the fantastic range of products available from the Black Dog Workshop. I am now a confirmed wood turning addict !

After some 35 years since turning my last bowel at school what a great day I had in Martin’s workshop. I was very nervous but with Martin expert tuition I managed to turn a bowel ‘amazing’. Thank you again Martin. See you again soon.

My wife and I both attended this course. My wife was a first time turner and I had been a self taught turner for a year. Had a good half hour get to know you chat over coffee to start with, then off to the workshop for the safety instructions. Martin demoed our first steps, we copied, I quickly learnt the proper way to use the bowl gouge. After finishing the outside of the bowl we then went for lunch. After lunch back to workshop for the afternoon to finish the bowl, again learning new and better techniques to produce my best bowl ever. My wife as a first timer made a bowl she was really proud of and really enjoyed her first time turning with Martins help and guidance. So if your a self taught or first time turner this course has everything to offer to enhance and improve your turning skills. Thank you Martin since the course, I have turned with a new confidence, which in turn means I’m turner better quality bowls. I Recommended this course highly.

I had a great day, as a first time turner I was amazed at the quality of bowl that with Martin’s very capable guidance I was able to produce. A very absorbing and enjoyable day, I would highly recommend his courses.

The facilities are excellent and Martin is a very good teacher. I was a total beginner and came away with a beautiful bowl that I really did turn myself. That proves the quality of the tuition. Thank you, Martin. Everyone is amazed with my bowl!

I thoroughly enjoyed my day creating a graceful bowl with inviting lines. Martin is a very friendly and relaxed tutor and also incredibly patient. He took great care to explain what we would be doing, when we would do it and how ! He not only has a great talent for creating beautiful works of art himself, but knows intuitively how to pass on his knowledge. He watched and listened attentively to us, his fledgling would be wood turners, and helped us to get a feel for the wood and the tools and how to use them to best effect, to gradually create curves and hollows. The whole process was quite a revelation to me and most definitely all-consuming! Lunch time came around very quickly and we were treated to an excellent meal in the very warm and welcoming atmosphere of the on site Tree House Coffee Shop; a lovely spot in which to relax and rejuvenate ready for our afternoon of more turning, sanding and waxing. I was thrilled with my finished product – a beautiful shiny sycamore wood bowl. I can highly recommend Martin’s workshop.
He is an excellent tutor and under his careful guidance and enthusiastic encouragement, I felt a great sense of accomplishment at the end of a very productive and hugely enjoyable day.

Great day, a relaxed and professional atmosphere centred around clear instruction entirely focused on what you need, when you need it. Good company with other novice turners and a learning environment where it’s safe to experiment without any embarrassment or awkwardness. The acid test – my first opportunity to turn after the workshop and I just had to get on the lathe. Be warned, Martin’s enthusiasm is infectious ! It was so much easier to create my best ever bowl, entirely by myself, than it has ever been thus far. It felt like all the learning from Martin was just “flowing out of me” and I couldn’t help hearing “keep the handle down”. You have to do the course to gain the benefit of that phrase ! Many thanks, Michael

Spent the day with Martin and two other budding wood turners and came away with a beautiful sycamore bowl. Started with a coffee in the coffee shop just getting to know each other and getting an important safety briefing from Martin before heading to the workshop to begin our day of turning.
Martin gave us a run through of the different tools we’d be using and introduced us to the lathe and its various features. His teaching style is relaxed and friendly but also very attentive, quickly pointing out when our technique wavered (handle down!!). After a busy morning shaping and finishing the outside of our bowls we stopped for a delicious lunch in the coffee shop (highly recommend the macaroni cheese). After lunch we turned to shaping and finishing the inside of the bowl.
I would definitely recommend this day to both beginners and those that have some experience with woodturning. Previous to attending this course I’d had a couple of failed attempts at turning bowls but now feel with my newly learnt techniques paired with Martin’s insights into understanding form and lines I now have the confidence to get back to my lathe and turn a bowl to be proud of.
Thanks to Martin for a top day and looking forward to returning to the Black Dog Workshop to further refine my skills in the near future.

I did a 1-1 course in colouring and texturing with Martin. I had a fantastic time and learnt so many different aspects in texturing and colouring as well as improving my turning skills. The workshop is light and airy which in turn has made me improve my own setup. I really can recommend and hopefully I’ll go back soon. Cheers Martin.
