If you have enjoyed one of my online demonstrations, complete with onscreen graphics, you will have seen how effective they are in explaining the techniques shown. This new service has been introduced to assist you if you need one to one advice, need to ask some specific questions, or even tuition using the latest online technology.

Use your booking time (up to 3 hours) how you want to. See below for more information and how to book your time.

Indicate here, in a little detail, what you would like to cover in your lesson

Description

For your Remote Lesson, You Will (Ideally) Need:

  • If you don’t have all this, don’t unduly worry, your tuition can be a personal demonstration and problem solving session.
  • A good quality internet connection to your workshop or good 4G signal;
  • The free to use Zoom meeting software (app) available from www.zoom.us as that will be the platform for the lesson;
  • A method where I may be able to view your tool technique. See the bottom of the page for ideal camera angles if you will be using a camera.
  • Standard set of woodturning gouges and tools.

Ideas on Using the Remote Lesson Time:

Available by the hour, here are some ideas on what we could cover with your booked time.

  • General Q&A and advice session;
  • Sharpening on the Robert Sorby Pro Edge;
  • Bowl Turning;
  • Colouring Using Dyes and Stains;
  • Sanding and Finishing;

The time is yours to use as you please. Avoid trying to cover too much in one session. Please note I do not currently offer tuition on the use of skew chisels nor carbide tools.

How To Book:

  1. Select your preferred date in Blue in the calendar above by clicking it;
  2. Fill in the Additional Information box with information about what you would like to go over;
  3. Click on ‘Check Availability’;
  4. Check the details, the click ‘Proceed to Check Out‘ – you do not need to pay anything yet;
  5. Add your details in checkout fields:
  6. Click on ‘Request Confirmation’.
  7. I’ll then double check your requested date is available in my calendars and send you a confirmation of the date and further information. After that, you will receive all necessary emails and information automatically. If I cannot make the date you request, I will be in touch to discuss alternative dates.
  8. After you receive your confirmation, you will also receive a request for the payment of your remote lesson. The link will be provided, but can also be found in the Orders section of your account.

Then What?

  1. Straight after your payment is received, I’ll send you information about the lesson (including the link to join the lesson) and what to expect as well as details on the Zoom platform we’ll be using;
  2. You should spend some time getting set up for the lesson, including working out where best to place your camera for ease of use;
  3. Test Zoom to experience its features using the information sent;
  4. Be on time for your meeting!

Ideal Camera Angles

If you plan on using a camera for your tuition, here’s a diagram of the best position for me to see your bowl hollowing technique. An overhead view may also be useful.

    • So long as there is a reasonable view of the tool at work,  a position on this side of the lathe is desirable….but remember, a camera is not necessary if you would like your tuition to be more of a personal demonstration and Q&A session.
